StarSense Explorer LT Telescopes
Models in this family:
Who it’s best for:
Casual observers who are dipping their toes into the hobby of astronomy. Consider the age-old wisdom: the best telescope is the one you will use most often. As the smallest and lightest members of the StarSense Explorer lineup, the LT models are easy to grab and go. If you want to start with something small, lightweight, and portable, then graduate to a larger or fully computerized scope later, this is a great choice.
Pros:
- Lightweight and compact
- Great for camping and travel
- StarSense Explorer technology at the most affordable price
Cons:
- Smaller apertures offer less light-gathering ability compared to DX and Dobsonian models
- Altitude slow-motion adjustment with a sliding rod can take some getting used to; you may need to practice a bit to get the hang of it
StarSense Explorer DX Telescopes
Models in this family:
Who it’s best for:
Serious beginners who may be limited on space but don’t want to sacrifice quality. You may be asking yourself if the DX models are worth the cost to upgrade. One turn of the slow-motion control knobs may be enough to convince you. This model is sturdier and offers a boost in image quality compared to the entry-level series. But at less than half the Dobsonians’ weight (and half the cost), there’s substantial appeal to these “Goldilocks” telescopes.
Pros:
- Larger optical tubes offer more light-gathering ability compared to the LT models
- Lighter and easier to carry than the Dobsonian models
- Smooth, dual-axis slow-motion controls make it easy to follow the on-screen arrows to your desired target
Cons:
- Higher price point than LT models
- Less light-gathering ability than Dobsonian models
StarSense Explorer Dobsonian Telescopes
Models in this family:
Who it’s best for:
Beginner-to-intermediate hobbyists who are looking to develop a lifelong love of astronomy. You’ll never “grow out of” a large Dobsonian. It’s also an excellent choice for people who want to share the night sky with friends, family, or the public. Set up your StarSense Explorer Dobsonian at a campsite, public star party, or school event, and share the Universe with everyone who peers into its eyepiece.
Pros:
- Huge aperture for bright, sharp, detailed views of faint celestial objects
- Outstanding performance under dark skies or in the city
- Sturdy construction and quality components that can last you a lifetime
Cons:
- Higher price point than LT or DX models
- Heavier and bulkier than LT or DX models
- More initial assembly required
